Wing Chun PDX Redesign

October 3, 2019 by danma 17 Comments

I have enabled eCommerce capabilities and a student only social platform. This test site is running off the Genesis theme. We found an area of concern about the test-site’s log on speed. I ran some tests below, and while I understand that the test sample is inadequate, feel strongly that Ray’s hosting service is slow. I have optimized the test-site on my host server.

Action List

  1. Install in Genesis Theme
  2. Design homepage
  3. Copy content
  4. WooComerce
  5. Buddypress
    1. Youzer
      1. Fix duplicate button issue
  6. Speed performance
    1. Migrate current test site on Ray’s server to my server: http://test.regroovemeditation.com
    2. Small sample load time tests
  7. Updated: http://www.testsite.wingchunpdx.com/online-documents/
  8. Updated http://test.regroovemeditation.com/ in preparation for Siteground migration
    1. Screaming Frog crawl on https://www.wingchunpdx.com/ for redirects
    2. Created Siteground account
    3. Point Domain (from Dreamhost) to Siteground
    4. Created all redirects for all 404 pages
  9. Added Social login.
  10. Helped client set up reCaptcha

    I am waiting for the client to set up admin rights to the live site so that I can upgrade HTTP to HTTPS. I will have to set up a backup on the host server. I will also set up a migration plugin to get it ready for when we feel the test-site is ready.

    There was an issue with the Youzer plugin that improves the social media (BuddyPress) plugin, where it had duplicate buttons. After contacting tech support they sent me a CSS hack. Because I could have figured that out myself I was disappointed by their solution. I went ahead with the CSS hack (display: none) and fixed the duplicate buttons in the social pages.

    The live site now has HTTPS now. I think it is time to explore the site speed issue.

    I had Ray register on the test-site I created on my Siteground hosted account and he reported a faster experience. He needs me to adjust online documents.

      I have finished the Online Document changes. Need to circle back with Ray’s approval.

    Starting to do research on transferring Ray’s current WP site to Siteground. I think it would be less complicated to move the current one first, then when ready, to upload the new design. I will need to update the test-site on my server before I do all that. Here is a reference on how to move to Siteground: https://www.siteground.com/blog/wp-migrator/

    Youzer CSS Hack:
    Enable Global CSS
    Enable styling code below:’
    .btn-group.select.yz-activity-privacy, .btn-group.select {display: none;}
    .youzer .thread-info a {text-decoration: underline;}

    Enable Activity CSS
    Enable styling code below:
    .btn-group.select.yz-activity-privacy, .btn-group.select {display: none;}

      I had to remove the CSS hack because it created an issue with removing the variant button on this page: http://www.testsite.wingchunpdx.com/product/family-pass/

      I need to find a better solution.

        I fixed the solution by applying the following to all the pages:
        .btn-group.select.yz-activity-privacy, .btn-group.select {display: none;}

        For the global I use just this:
        .youzer .thread-info a {text-decoration: underline;}

    The site is currently giving 400 Bad Request pages, so I created a technical support ticket: https://my.siteground.com/support/history/ticket/TGczMFpIb0lKZz09/3360671
